We're going to arrive in Alaska on 4th June. First, we have to go north, because planes along with most other forms of transport only go
as far as Fairbanks, and our journey really has to begin in the town of
Deadhorse (permanent population 25). The image behind this post is of
the Dalton Highway stretching south from there. The Dalton Highway is
the first recognised section of the Pan-American Highway, which
stretches from the top to the bottom of the continent, give or take a
few bits where it's unofficial or turns into jungle. This, apart from places where we want to wander off somewhere else, get lost, stuck or
distracted, is our route. Any travel or maps geeks can read more about
it here.
It
shows just how prepared we are that it was only when glancing at that
article just now that I learned the journey is apparently almost 30,000
miles. We don't have an excess of plans. In fact, unless 'go to Alaska
and put our thumbs out' is a plan, we don't really have any. Well, my
companion has an almost pathological desire to visit Idaho, and I can
speak just enough Spanish to apologise for not speaking it better, but
that hardly counts.
But just starting, setting off,
beginning the journey, has become as important as anything else. After
that, who knows? Or cares that much?!
And we promised to keep people updated and take photos, so if
you're interested in any of that stuff this is where it's going to be.
See you in America :)
